Before the subscriber Clerk of the Circuit Court of
Alachua County Eastern Circuit of Florida
personally came John Slaughter, to me well
known to be the person who executed the foregoing
Instrument of writing and acknowledged that he
had executed the same for the purposes therein mentioned

  This Indenture made the eighteenth day of September
A.D. one thousand eight hundred and fifty five, Between
William Spires of Alachua County and State of Florida
of the first part, and Thomas A. Bradford of the
County and State aforesaid, of the second part, Witnesseth
that the said party of the first part, for and in
consideration of the sum of five hundred dollars to him
in hand paid by the said party of the second part, has
sold, and do by these presents sell, grant, convey and con=
=firm, to the said party of the second part, his heirs
and assigns the following described tract of land lying
and being situated in the Town of Newnansville, County
and State aforesaid, and known in the plat of said
Town, as lot No five (5) and the South half of lot NO
four (4) Range one (1) Block No three (3) with the
appurtenances, and all the estate, title and interest, of the
said party of the first part therein.
  This conveyance is intended as a mortgage to secure
the payment of two certain promissory notes, now held
by the party of the second part, and given by the party 
of the first part, and for the sum of two hundred dollars
dated the eighteenth day of September A.D. 1855, and
payable to Thomas A. Bradford or bearer on the first
July A.D. one thousand eight hundred and fifty six,
and are for the sum of three hundred (300.00) dollars
dated the eighteenth day of September A.D. 1855, and 
payable to Thomas A. Bradford or bearer on the first day
of July A.D. one thousand eight hundred and fifty seven
and if the amount of the said notes principle and interest
shall be paid at maturity, then these presents shall
become void, and the estate hereby granted shall cease
