    C.E. Howell To R.M. Clapp
                "Mortgage"
State of Florida } Whereas I C.E. Howell (Bachelor) am Justly indebted to
Alachua County   } R.M. Clapp in the sum of One hundred and fifty dollars
which said sum of money is covenanted to be paid by my certain promissory
note bearing even date herewith said note being due and payable one year
after date and bearing interest from date at the rate of Twelve percent
per annum And whereas I am desirous of fully and better securing
the payment of said note and the sum of money mentioned therein. 
Therefore know all men by these presents that that I C.E. Howell for and in
consideration of the premises and of one dollar to me in hand paid
have granted bargained sold and conveyed and by these presents do grant
bargain sell and convey unto the said R.M. Clapp his heirs and assigns
all the following described piece parcel or tract of land situated
lying and being in the County of Alachua State of Florida to wit:
Commencing at the NE corner of the Thomas Napier Grant of one
thousand acres thence North 5 3/4 degrees West four chains and fifty
links to a Stake thence South 84 1/2 degrees West Twelve chains and
Eighty links to the water line of Bivens Arm thence along said water line
in a South Easterly direction to Stake thence North 84 1/4 degrees East Eleven
chains and Eighty links to place of beginning Containing Five 53/100 acres
more or less Together with all and singular the tenements hereditaments and
appurtenances to the same belonging or in anywise appertaining To Have
and to Hold the same unto the said R.M.Clapp his heirs and assigns
forever Provided however and these presents are upon this express condition
that if the said E.C. Howell his heirs or assigns shall well and truly
pay or cause to be paid the sum of money covenanted to be paid by said
note together with the interest to accrue thereon according to the
legal tenor and effect thereof then this obligation shall become
null and void otherwise to remain in full force and virtue And it is
hereby further agree and Stipulated that the said C.E. Howell his
heirs or assigns will pay all costs expenses and Attorney's fees which the
said R.M. Clapp may be put to in enforcing the collection of the aforesaid
sum of money covenanted to be paid by said note by foreclosure or otherwise
In Witness Whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my
seal on this 23rd day of January AD 1884
