--------- James S. Gibbes --------
day of May in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and
eighty four, and my first Codocil made and executed on the
twelvth day of May in the year of Our Lord eighteen hun-
dred and eighty five.
Whereas the estate of my late son George Evans Gibbes,
has turned out in a very unsatisfactory manner, and his
widow Kate Gibbes will not be as well provided for as had
been expected, And whereas I had advanced certain sums of
money to my said son from time to time, taking his notes
for the same, and thus am a large creditor to his estate in
which capacity I desire to act in such a manner as will most benefit
the said widow, and seeing that certain investments (which much

memory) of his last years) were likely to be sacrificed, I there-
fore purchased same when sold by the executor, under the order
of the Probate Court and now desire in token of my love and
affection for the widow of my said son to convey to her the final
interest in these investments, subject to the conditions on which
I hold them. I therefore give and bequeath unto Kate Gibbes
the said widow of my said son five hundred shares of the
Capital Stock of the "City of Charleston Waterworks Company"

each, eight third mortgage bonds of one thousand dollars
each, fifteen third mortgage bonds of one hundred dollars each
nine income bonds of one thousand dollars each, subject
however to the conditions of the Syndicate of which I am
a member, and which was formed to aid in the devel-
opment of said Waterworks, which conditions must be
carried out by my executors before delivery of said securities
handing to said Kate Gibbes, however, any dividends or interest
which may meanwhile be paid on said stocks or bonds
I furthermore give and bequeath to Kate Gibbes two hun-
dred and thirty shares of the Capital Stock of the Com-
mercial Wharf and Cotton Press Company, of Charleston
South Carolina (of the face value of twenty three thousand
dollars) this gift is however subject to the arrangement
under which the said shares of stock are now held by my
old house of Gibbes & Company, which business is being
carried on by my young friend Henry S. Holmes under
my approval and with my aid, The aforesaid Shares
