Spring Term A.D. 1898
Tuesday May 10th 1898
At a regular Term of the Circuit Court of the Fifth Judicial
Circuit of Florida in and for Alachua County for the Spring
Term AD 1898 begun and holden on the 10th day May 1898 at the
Court House in the City of Gainesville, Alachua County Florida
the following proceedings were begun and held to wit:
At which was present His Honor W.A. Hocker Judge of the
5th Judicial Circuit of Florida, L.W. Fennell Sheriff of Alachua
County and H.C. Denton Clerk of this Court.
It appearing to the Court that no jury was drawn at the last term
of the Court by the Judge and that the Clerk of this Court after ten
days notice previously given and after the Sheriff had proclaimed
the meeting and its purpose at the Court House door, did, in the
presence of the Sheriff and the County Judge in pursuance of law
at least fifteen days before this Term, draw from the box containing
the names of the persons selected by the County Commissioners to serve
as jurors for the year 1898 the following named persons to serve as
jurors at this Term of the Court and a venire for said jurors was
issued by the Clerk of this Court and placed in the hands of the Sheriff
and return upon the same was made at 9.30 O'Clock A.M. this
10th day May 1898 at the Opening of this Term of the Court.
Whereupon the Judge of the Court in open Court placed the names
of said persons so returned and present and not excused in a box
and drew therefrom the names of the following persons as Grand Jurors
Viz: R.W. Hall, J.P. Tompkins S.H. Gay, J.W. May H.L. Bevill
J.E. Harrison Jr, John Sherouse, F.J. Hagood T.R. Bennett
W.H. Draeger, R.P. Lumpkin, Waterman Johnson N.E. Benson
W.J. Hamilton, S.L. Crews, J.L. Slocum, Geo M. Desha & J.A. Reid
and at the same time drew the names of the following persons
as petit jurors, viz: L.P. Stroble, C.A. Gassett, W.A. Strickland
J.H. Cason and W.C. Matheson.
Whereupon the Grand Jury by order of the Court were duly sworn by
the Clerk and retired to select their Foreman and thereafter they
returned into open Court and announced that they had selected
Frank J. Hagood as their Foreman, Thereupon the Court after
delivering the usual charge instructed the Grand Jury to retire to their
room in charge of the Bailiff J.R.W. Grissom who also had been
duly sworn as such by the Clerk of this Court

It appearing to the Judge of this Court, after selecting the Grand
Jury, that there only remained in the Box the names of Five persons
from the regular Venire, and there being many cases ready for trial, It is
