Alachua County
		   This Indenture made the Twentieth day 
of November Eighteen hundred & Thirty Two between Gad Humphreys of 
the Territory & County aforesaid of the one part & Mess’rs J.& C. Lawton of 
the City of Charleston State of South Carolina Witnesseth that 
the said G. Humphreys hath promised to pay the said J.& C. Lawton 
one Thousand dollars on or before the first day of April next 
ensuing for value received.  Now for and in consideration of the sum 
of five dollars by the said J.& C. Lawton to the said G. Humphreys 
in hand paid the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged as well 
as for the better securing the payment of the aforesaid promissory 
note the said Humphreys hath granted bargained & sold and 
doth by these presents grant bargain & sell unto the said J.& C. Lawton 
their heirs and assigns his thirty seven Negroes now in the County 
of Alachua Territory aforesaid named as follows.  Cornelia, Lancaster, 
Morris, Sampson, Joe, Andrew, Peter 1st, Peter 2nd, Sam 1st, Sam 2nd, 
Ansel, Hardy, August, Mungo, Dick, Worley, Toney, Beck, 
Sally, Nancy, Sophy, Dolly, Katy 1st, Katy 2nd, Jane, Amy, Cyrus, 
Elsy, Cooter, Nursey, Limus, Tom, Stepney, Lucy, Flora, Frank, 
July.  To have & to hold  the said bargained Negroes unto the said 
J.& C. Lawton their heirs and assigns to their own proper use and 
benefit forever And the said G. Humphreys for himself his heirs and Executors 
administrators the said bargained Negroes unto the said J.& C. Lawton 
will warrant and forever defend against the claims of himself & 
his heirs and against the claim of all other persons whatsoever 
Provided Nevertheless that if the said Humphreys his heirs Executors & administrators 
shall & do well & truly pay or cause to be paid unto the said J.& C. Lawton their heirs 
and assigns the aforesaid sum of One Thousand dollars on the day mentioned & 
appointed for the payment thereof in the promissory note then & from thenceforth as well 
this present Indenture and the right to the property thereby conveyed ** the said promissory note 
shall cease determine & be void to all intents & purposes.  In Testimony whereof the 
said Humphreys hath hereunto set his hand & seal the day & year above written
