This photo clearly shows the space under the floor of the Courthouse.  The following County Commission Minutes mentions that space.  The Minutes from an earlier meeting sheds a little light on early courthouse decor.

          Court Alachua County Gainesville August 16th 1858 At a Called meeting of the County Commissioners.  Present L. Williams, James L. Cooper and E.H. Jordan President of the board, There being a quorum present, the board proceeded to business
          Ordered, that William S. Perry, J.R. Zetrour and John McKinstry be appointed Commissioners to mark out and open a road from Gainesville to the Putnam County line at or near James M. Hawthorn=s, intersecting the road at that place for Palatka ---
           Ordered, that John H. Cosby, Dr. A.H. Mathess and James L. Cooper be appointed Commissioners to mark out and open a road from Micanopy to the Marion County line at or near Feaster's Field ----
            Ordered, that five dollars be paid on and in full, of the bill of Henry Fewell for repairing chairs, and stopping out the hogs under the Court House ---
            Ordered, that a precinct election be established at Providence Church east of Newnans Lake, and to be known by the name of Providence ---
            Ordered that Wm J. Duren be appointed a commissioner on the road from Wm Colston's to the **** of Hog Town Creek
            Ordered that the account of Five dollars of Rinehart for making desk for Clerk's Office be rec'd and paid
            Ordered that the petition of James B. Bailey be rec'd and that T. Ingram, T.W. McCaa and Wm. H. Babcock be appointed commissioners to carry out the purposes of said petition
             There being no further business before the board, they adjourned

           At a called meeting of the board of County Commissioners Present James C. Standley, James L. Cooper and E.H. Jordan President of the board, proceeded to business
           Ordered that Henry Rucker and Joseph Sappington be appointed Commissioners to open a road from John B. Standlys on the Wacasassa by Henry Ruckers to the Sewanee River
           Ordered that Enoch Geiger and Geo W. Sanches be appointed Commissioners on the road from Newnansville to Half Moon Pond
           Ordered that R.S. Stoughton,  John D. Young and Moses Ramsey be appointed Commissioners on the road from Micanopy to Ramseys
           Ordered that Doct         Stringfellow, Washington Ramsey and James C. Standley be appointed Commissioners on the road from Ramseys to Newnansville
           Ordered that Eli Ramsey be appointed Commissioner on the road from Ramseys to Wacahoota
           Ordered that J.G. Camron, Edward Lewis and B.T. Rives be appointed Commissioners on the road from Micanopy to Fort Harley
           Ordered that James A. Turner and E.P. Hickson be appointed Commissioners on the road from Micanopy to the County line on the Orange Springs road
           Ordered that James Pindarvis, Jacob Stroble and Simeon Dell be appointed Commissioners on the road from Newnansville to Natural Bridge
           Ordered that J.P.C. Masseys Account for hauling and spreading Saw dust in the Court House be allowed and ordered to be paid
           Ordered that Maj. James B. Bailey's Official bond as County Treasurer be received the County Treasurer's book having been examined found correct and approved as per order January 8th 1858 The sum of Seven hundred & 16/100 Dollars being found as balance in his hands on that day
            There being no further business before the board the Court adjourned to meet again at their regular meeting in the 1st Monday in April next
