made the following report viz.
In Circuit Court of Florida in and for the County of Al-
achua Fifth Judicial Circuit of Florida To wit
Fall Term A.D. 1868
Upon the completion of their labors - we the Grand Jurors beg leave
to make the following general presentments
- We have examined the Court
house and find it very much out of repair also the fence enclosing
the Square on which the Court house stands - We therefore respectfully urge
upon the board of County Commissioners the absolute necessity of having
the same immediately repaired.
In addition to the repairs nec-
essary upon the Court house and inclosure we recommend that the
Court Room as well as the Jury Rooms and the Officers in the Court house
be supplied with furniture sufficient to render them convenient and
comfortable We find that the County
has been sometime without a Jail in consequence of the neglect
of the County Commissioners to build one and that the Crim=
inal laws have been very seriously impeded thereby. We therefore recommend that the
County Commissioners procure a suitable lot not too remote from the
Court house and build thereon a secure and substantial Jail immedi=
ately.
We have examined the records and
papers in the several offices and find them correctly kept and in good
condition except the books of the County treasury which we were unable
to find there being no such officer, We therefore earnestly recommend
the appointment of one at an early day.
We find that the various public roads
and bridges in the County (without exception) are in a deplorable con=
dition many of them being almost impassible We especially call the atten
tion of the County Commissioners to this fact.
We regret to find the planting interest
of the entire County suffering very seriously from the defective laws
regulating the privileges of persons laboring under contract. We therefore
earnestly recommend that the legislature at it next session do pass such
laws as well more effectually protect the planting interest in the County.
We find that very serious injury is liable
to be done to many good citizens from the manner in which this legal
